Description
Perform a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks in relation to installation, repair, and maintenance.  Operate light road maintenance equipment, simple power tools, and hand tools in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of water, sewer, streets/roads, storm drainage, and parks/pools, facilities/grounds, and equipment. Work as a crewmember is performed under the public works supervisor, who provides direct supervision. Work is primarily outside.
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.  The omission of a specific statement of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
 
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
1. Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of service equipment.
2. Performs building, landscaping, painting, lawn mowing, and other maintenance and repair such as:
   A. Picks up and empties trash from all facilities, buildings, and parks
   B. Cleans and sanitizes restrooms; repairs vandalism damage
   C. Mows, trims and edges lawns and City street shoulders
   D. Cleans ditches and culverts in City streets
   E. Prunes trees and shrubs, and sprays to control insects and weeds
   F. Maintains playground equipment, benches, gates, and fencing
   G. Performs minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry tasks
   H. Paint buildings when needed if schedule or weather permits
3. Assists to lay and join water pipelines; install fittings and valves; tap into and repair irrigation lines.
4. Assists in the maintenance of sewage treatment lagoon, making all necessary repairs if possible.
5. Assist in Conducting the daily inspection of the city sewer plant system and obtains necessary test samples.
6. Assists in the repair, maintenance, and construction of dirt, gravel, oil mat, and paved streets, sidewalks, curbs, catch basins, and street signs.  Performs periodic refuse removal.
7. Operates automotive and power-driven equipment.  Assists in the service and repairs of such equipment.
8. Performs other duties for short periods of time in special situations for other departments when called upon.
9. Other tasks as assigned by the public works supervisor.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to read sewer and water maps, knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in a sewer, street, and drainage construction and maintenance. 
- Possesses general mechanical aptitude and ability to perform skilled tasks with some supervision.
- Possesses the ability to carry out oral and written instructions, perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance and withstand exposure to variable weather conditions.
- Skill and training in operating and maintaining city-owned equipment.
- Extensive knowledge and training in safety techniques in the safe use of vehicles, tools, materials, and equipment required to perform his/her job duties.
- Possesses the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, public officials, city employees, and the general public.   
- Perform responsibilities in a manner that clearly shows effective communication and cooperation and that promotes the open exchange of information, respect, high ethical standards, professionalism, and understands the perspective and needs of others.
- Have knowledge of regulations affecting construction and maintenance activities.
 
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING:
- Possesses a basic understanding of water line maintenance and construction, sewer maintenance and construction, street maintenance and construction.
- Graduation from a high school or trade school or equivalent GED certificate or an equal combination of experience and training.
 
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess a valid Oregon Drivers License
