High Desert Food & Farm Alliance 2019 Grow & Give Market Internship Location: Bend, OR Dates: Market A) Wednesdays, Jun 6-Oct 10, 1pm-7pm Market B) Saturdays, Jun 16 to mid-October, 9am-3pm Note: You will be primarily responsible for ONLY one of the markets and will need to occasionally fill in for the second one as needed. If interested in applying or learning more, please email Meiko@hdffa.org Internship Summary: High Desert Food and Farm Alliance (HDFFA) is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our team and operate our fresh food donation booths at the Downtown Bend and/or the Northwest Crossing Farmers Market this summer for the Grow & Give Program. HDFFA collects fresh produce from local farmers, gardeners, and community members to improve accessibility at our regional food pantries. The Grow & Give Market Intern will collect fresh food donations at the farmers market to be distributed through NeighborImpact to local pantries and food shelves in Central Oregon, and will participate in at least one on-farm gleaning event. Primary Internship Responsibilities: Demonstrate knowledge of HDFFA organization and programs as well as represent HDFFA in a positive manner Set up Grow & Give booth at the markets Speak knowledgeably and enthusiastically about the Grow & Give program specifically Verbally engage with market patrons Encourage consumers to purchase products to donate at the market Encourage backyard gardeners to bring excess produce to market for donation Educate consumers about HDFFA and the importance of getting fresh food to families in need Distribute HDFFA & NeighborImpact materials Weigh and record food donations Collect excess produce from farmers and the end of the market Transport and deposit food to storage location Maintain clear communication with the Food Access Program Manager Educational Opportunities: Meet regional farmers and learn about the products they produce Gain first hand experience of working with and advocating for a non-profit Gain or polish public speaking skills by engaging with community members and potential donors Experience working for a successful and growing regional non-profit Gain experience working with and supporting Grow & Give volunteers Tour the regional food bank and learn about food insecurity in Central Oregon Participate in one or more on-farm gleaning events Qualifications: Reliable transportation Ability to drive a pick-up truck Interest in supporting community food security Strong communication skills, self-reliant, and positive attitude Passion for local food and community health education Ability to engage interested community members Experience, or willingness to learn, to sell products, advocate for HDFFA and solicit donations
