Description

Are you interested in gaining leadership skills and working in the public health field? Deschutes County Health Services is seeking a High School student in Bend to serve as a Community Health Advocate. This person will provide community members and organizations with youth perspectives concerning substance abuse prevention, as well as help lead a youth committee of local high schoolers focused on preventing youth substance use (Teen Community Health Advocates). The Community Health Advocate will work alongside a diverse group of community members to reduce underage substance use, focusing on the City of Bend and some broader County and regional projects. This position will work remotely until further notice.

Position Responsibilities:
Under the guidance of a supervisor, the Community Health Advocate will:
- Lead recruitment efforts for the youth committee (Teen Community Health Advocates), with the goal of adding 5-7 new high school members from Bend
- Co-lead planning and facilitation of youth committee meetings
- Represent youth perspectives at Quarterly Shared Future Coalition meetings, as able
- Develop and conduct presentations to local officials and key community leaders (with our support)
- Learn about local data, attend trainings to understand patterns of local underage alcohol and other substance misuse, and use that knowledge and training to tackle projects related to preventing underage use.
Qualifications:
- Current high school student in Bend, incoming 10-12th grade preferred
- Interest in promoting health and well-being
- Leadership skills preferred but not required
- Ability to work remotely (until further notice)
