Description

The SummerKids Junior Counselor (JC) Internship program is designed to give teens practical work experience while learning dynamic leadership skills, practicing general responsibilities and expectations of being an employee, and acting as role models for younger campers.  The program lasts for three weeks in total: 1 week of training July 6th-9th and a subsequent 2 full weeks (5 consecutive days each) of practicum hours at SummerKids (practicum weeks are flexible and assigned at the start of training).

SummerKids is a weekly theme-based day camp for youth in Kindergarten through the 6th Grade.  The camp is typically hosted at a Bend elementary school (still TBD) and can have up to 100 or more youth each week, separated into individual groups of 8-12 kids of a similar age.  The camp runs from 9 am-3:30 pm, with extended care options beginning as early as 7:30 am and ending by 5:30 pm.

Educational Aspect

During the training week, July 6th-9th, Junior Counselors, or JCs, will explore their leadership styles and discover how to flex their strengths while being a role model for younger campers. JCs will learn tips and tricks for building a positive group dynamic and working in a team, as well as how to meet general job expectations.  And of course, they will have ample opportunities for bonding with other JCs, singing camp songs, playing games and making new connections.

During the practicum weeks, interns will put what they have learned in training into practice as an assistant to a SummerKids group instructor.  They will have daily check-ins with their supervisor, receive constructive feedback on their performance, and have an opportunity to process their challenges and share their successes with their supervisor and peers.  Upon successful completion of the program, JC’s will have a formal record of their internship hours, as well as a professional reference to use in applying for jobs.
