Description

Are you interested in gaining leadership skills and working in or learning about the public health field? Deschutes County Health Services is seeking a high school student to serve as a Community Health Advocate. This person will provide community members and organizations with youth perspectives in relation to substance abuse prevention. Advocate will work alongside a diverse group of community members in an effort to reduce underage substance use (may include tobacco, marijuana, alcohol) with a focus on the City of Bend, while aligning with county and regional efforts.

Educational Aspect

Under the guidance of a supervisor, the Community Health Advocate will:

 Co-facilitate Teen Community Health Advocates (TCHA) meetings

 Set meeting agendas and prepare materials

 Collaborate with Deschutes County Prevention staff, and other community organizations to identify and produce projects related to substance abuse prevention

 Represent youth perspectives at quarterly Shared Future Coalition Advisory Board meetings and other committee meetings

 Work alongside community professionals

 Assist in the implementation of substance use prevention activities

 Develop and conduct presentations to public officials and key community leaders

 Help recruit 5-7 additional youth leaders to assist with advocacy and youth perspectives

Further Requirements

Requirements include:

 Approximately 3-4 hours a week starting in June 2020 and continuing through December 2020. Hours may differ by week and month based on projects and youth availability (especially during summer months).

 Participate in at least 80% of youth committee meetings (approximately monthly) and Shared Future Coalition meetings (quarterly on Wednesdays from 12-2pm)

 Public speaking; speaking directly to local and state public officials

 

Qualifications:

 Interest in promoting health and well-being

 Enrolled in a high school located in the City of Bend, 10th-12th grade preferred.

 Leadership experience preferred but not required

 Transportation to and from meetings is primarily the responsibility of the student. Meetings will primarily be located at 1130 NW Harriman Street, Bend, Oregon (near downtown Bend). Additional transportation options may be made available, as needed.
